The festivities of Yemanjá (Yemojá) begin on February 2nd. The tradition of sending presents to the sea is one of the most preserved rituals inside the religion. It has grown everyday extending itself to the society as a whole. This can be observed at New Year’s along the coast where it is extremely busy and people are going to the waters to express their gratitude and to ask for a year of hope and victories, be it for love, health, family or work.
Yemanjá is a orixá that, ruling our head, the unconscious, has a very strong internal appeal inside each one of us, and that is why this orixá is so popular… faith becomes very much alive, and hope grows even in those that have given up a long time ago, the non-believers… toughened through hard times…. the strength of the deity is in the movement of the waters, in the happiness that the sea provides the summer, in the certainty that the abundance of food will provide for the world, in the transportation of people and goods through its waters.
Let us then worship this month Yemanjá with all dignity and respect she deserves, for all the sea provides us. Through this mysterious kingdom she lives with her father Olokum, we may find greater support for our existence here on Earth.
